STUDYING IN INDIA
There are over a billion people in India, a nation that accounts for the second highest percentage of the world’s population. As such, one can expect a rich offering of languages, traditions, holidays, food and culture among the varied Indian households. Family in India is the cornerstone of its diverse inhabitants, and is the key structural element behind a nation of 18 official languages and significant religious populations of Hindi, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, and Parsi. India gained its independence in 1947 through the widespread use of nonviolent resistance, and has made large economic strides in the last decade. Almost 70 percent of its residents still live in rural areas, though its cities are growing quickly.
School
Indian schools are divided into groupings that might appear different to those accustomed to school systems of the west. “Secondary” schools are generally comprised of grades seven to ten, while “Higher Secondary” accounts for the eleventh and twelfth graders. Usually school is half to two-thirds of a day and in the evening students go to tutorials.
LIVING IN INDIA
Lifestyle and family living
Families in India tend to be large – a typical household may accommodate 3 generations or more, though in more urban settings families may be much smaller. Expect to be very familiar with extended family and to participate in family meals. In some cultures “independence” means doing things without parents; expect Indian parents to be involved in their children’s daily activities. Within this warm and familial culture, if a young adult brings a friend into the house, the entire family might participate in entertaining them.
