With nearly 1800 km of mostly rocky coastline and more than a thousand islands, Croatia offers one of the best preserved stretches of the Mediterranean coast. And yet there is much diversity in this little European country, with mountain ranges continuing just south of the Alps, idyllic hills in the north and a fertile plain in the east. The capital city of Zagreb is a prime example of the Central European identity, with its lovely parks and an architecture bearing the Austro-Hungarian signature. Historical monuments from the Roman and Venetian times can be admired along the coast, mainly in Istria and Dalmatia. As for its 4.5 million people, one can clearly recognize that proud Slavic spirit amidst so many different influences, emerging every now and then when Croatian sportsmen, whether it’s handball or water polo, football or tennis, celebrate new successes.
