This program is for teachers who are fully qualified (we prefer teachers from secondary schools) who would like to experience teaching in Colombia. The idea is to share different teaching approaches in the two countries.

This is a very short program that only takes 4 weeks. The program dates are very flexible and the participant can pick the arrival and end date from February until October. Please keep in mind that the start day and end day should always be in the week.

You will normally stay with a host family and you will be working as a teaching assistant at a private or a public school in Colombia.

It’s important with Spanish knowledge if you like to work in a "normal" public or private school.

As a teacher, you must be respectful and able to keep a close and horizontal communication with the students and other teachers. It is desirable that you have an autonomous, responsible, creative and leadership-skilled character.

The host family will provide breakfast and dinner. The school where the teacher will work will provide lunch. Participants are located in Baranquilla, Bucaramanga, Cali, Cucuta, Medellin, Periera, Popayan, Putumayo and Yopal. We are happy to welcome vegetarian participants on our programs, however, they should be aware that vegetarianism is not yet widely common in Colombia. Hence, vegetarians should be willing to prepare their own food (in case that it is provided) or, potentially, accept certain compromises in their diet.

Social life

The local AFS volunteers, your working colleagues and/or your host family are happy to help you to become active in the local community – e.g. by engaging in local sports activities or other leisure time activities. This will help you to meet people your age and, thus, find new friends and build your own network. Furthermore, it gives you the opportunity to integrate into Colombian culture, to learn the Spanish language and it gives you the chance to experience Colombian habits and traditions.
